Introduction

March 15, 2010

You are a merchant living in one of the great cities along the Silk Road.  Together, with your fellow merchants, you will soon be determining what trade goods will be bought and sold along the Silk Road.  Since you will spend quite a bit of time on the road — without modern conveniences such as your iPod or MP3 player and your personal DVD player — you will have a lot of time to think.  Here are some of the essential questions that you should consider:

  • How does geography shape how we live? (In what ways would your life be the same or different if you lived in a Silk Road city vs. living in Windsor?)
  • What are the consequences of trade/buying and selling?
  • What considerations are there when starting a business? OR How are goods and services produced, distributed, and consumed?
